Introduction
Hero MotoCorp, the leading two-wheeler manufacturer in India, has long dominated the commuter motorcycle segment with models like the Splendor. However, its premium offerings, such as the Karizma XMR 210 and Mavrick 440, have struggled to gain the same level of popularity. The Xtreme series, on the other hand, has disrupted the market, especially with the Xtreme 125R and Xtreme 160R.
Now, Hero has launched the Xtreme 250R, the biggest and most powerful motorcycle in the Xtreme lineup. But does it have the performance and refinement to stand out in the competitive 250cc segment? We took the Xtreme 250R for a test ride across different road conditions in Udaipur to find out.
Hero Xtreme 250R Pricing & Competitors
Unveiled at EICMA last year, the Hero Xtreme 250R is priced at Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. It is positioned between two major competitors:
- Bajaj Pulsar N250 (Rs 1.65 lakh) – Offers less performance than the Xtreme 250R.
- KTM 250 Duke (Rs 2.27 lakh) – Delivers similar performance but is significantly more expensive.

Design & Styling
Hero has taken a bold approach to the Xtreme 250R’s design, making it the most aggressive-looking bike in the Xtreme lineup. The highlights include:

The tyres struggle under hard acceleration, limiting the bike’s full dynamic potential. An upgrade to grippier rubber would enhance confidence in corners and under braking.
Ergonomics & Comfort
Hero has struck a fine balance between sportiness and comfort:
- Slightly forward-leaning handlebars provide a sporty feel.
- Rear-set footpegs positioned for comfort without being too aggressive.
- Spacious rider’s seat with firm padding, suitable for long-distance rides.
- Seat height of 806mm, making it accessible to most riders.
- High pillion seat that might be uncomfortable for passengers.
At 167.7 kg, the bike is 5 kg heavier than the KTM 250 Duke, but it remains easy to maneuver in city traffic.

Performance & Riding Experience
The Hero Xtreme 250R is powered by a 249cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces:

Acceleration & Speed
- 0-60 km/h: 3.6 seconds (claimed: 3.2s)

- Cruising at 100 km/h: ~6,000 rpm in sixth gear
The engine feels lively post 5,500 rpm and continues to pull strongly until 8,500 rpm. The slip and assist clutch makes gearshifting smooth, though the lever reach could be improved.
The refinement levels are excellent, with minimal vibrations up to 7,500 rpm. At higher revs, slight vibrations are noticeable on the footpegs but add to the bike’s character.
Suspension & Handling

The suspension handles corners well but feels busy on poorly surfaced roads. At triple-digit speeds, the bike remains stable, and the wide handlebars make quick direction changes easy.

Tyres lack grip, especially during aggressive cornering.
Braking system needs more bite & feedback.
Braking Performance
The Xtreme 250R gets a 320mm front disc and 230mm rear disc with Bybre calipers. The brakes perform decently but lack the strong bite needed for aggressive riding. The ABS kicks in sooner than expected, further limiting braking performance.
Final Verdict: Does the Hero Xtreme 250R Deliver Bang for Your Buck?
The Hero Xtreme 250R is a well-rounded package in the 250cc streetfighter segment. It delivers strong performance, a stylish design, and a premium feature set at an affordable price. However, it still has room for improvement in fit & finish, braking performance, and tyre grip.
