Hero Xtreme 250R review: Discover price, mileage, features, pros & cons, and performance of Hero’s premium 250cc streetfighter. Compare with Bajaj Pulsar N250 & KTM 250 Duke.
Introduction
Hero MotoCorp, the leading two-wheeler manufacturer in India, has long dominated the commuter motorcycle segment with models like the Splendor. However, its premium offerings, such as the Karizma XMR 210 and Mavrick 440, have struggled to gain the same level of popularity. The Xtreme series, on the other hand, has disrupted the market, especially with the Xtreme 125R and Xtreme 160R.

Now, Hero has launched the Xtreme 250R, the biggest and most powerful motorcycle in the Xtreme lineup. But does it have the performance and refinement to stand out in the competitive 250cc segment? We took the Xtreme 250R for a test ride across different road conditions in Udaipur to find out.
Hero Xtreme 250R Pricing & Competitors
Unveiled at EICMA last year, the Hero Xtreme 250R is priced at Rs 1.80 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. It is positioned between two major competitors:
- Bajaj Pulsar N250 (Rs 1.65 lakh) – Offers less performance than the Xtreme 250R.
- KTM 250 Duke (Rs 2.27 lakh) – Delivers similar performance but is significantly more expensive.
The Xtreme 250R is available exclusively at Hero Premia showrooms, and bookings are now open.
Design & Styling
Hero has taken a bold approach to the Xtreme 250R’s design, making it the most aggressive-looking bike in the Xtreme lineup. The highlights include:

- LED headlamp with integrated DRLs for a sharp front-end look.
- Sculpted fuel tank and angular shrouds adding to the streetfighter appeal.
- High-set pillion seat that complements the aggressive stance.
- Minimalist rear-end design with an LED taillamp integrated under the seat.
- Tyre hugger that balances out the sharp rear profile.
The bike is available in three color options:
- Firestorm Red (with gold-finished USD forks)

- Stealth Black

- Neon Shooting Star

Build Quality & Fit-Finish
While Hero has improved build quality over previous models, the Xtreme 250R still has noticeable panel gaps that affect perceived quality. The switchgear is well-finished, but improving fit and finish would elevate the product further.
Features & Instrumentation
Hero has loaded the Xtreme 250R with impressive features:
- Full-LED lighting (headlamp, taillamp, indicators)
- LCD color display with Bluetooth connectivity
- Turn-by-turn navigation
- Lap timer & 0-100 km/h timer
- USB-A charging port
- Dual-channel ABS with Road & Track modes
Areas for Improvement:
- Lacks a TFT display, which is available on some competitors.
- Complicated ABS mode toggling, requiring long button presses.
- ABS mode resets to ‘Road’ after turning off the bike, which can be annoying.
Wheels & Tyres
The Xtreme 250R runs on 17-inch alloy wheels, fitted with MRF Zapper tyres:
- 110-section (Front)
- 150-section (Rear)
The tyres struggle under hard acceleration, limiting the bike’s full dynamic potential. An upgrade to grippier rubber would enhance confidence in corners and under braking.
Ergonomics & Comfort
Hero has struck a fine balance between sportiness and comfort:

- Slightly forward-leaning handlebars provide a sporty feel.
- Rear-set footpegs positioned for comfort without being too aggressive.
- Spacious rider’s seat with firm padding, suitable for long-distance rides.
- Seat height of 806mm, making it accessible to most riders.
- High pillion seat that might be uncomfortable for passengers.
At 167.7 kg, the bike is 5 kg heavier than the KTM 250 Duke, but it remains easy to maneuver in city traffic.
Fuel Tank Capacity & Mileage
- Fuel tank capacity: 11.5 liters (one of the smallest in its segment)
- Test ride fuel efficiency: ~26.7 km/l (mixed highway & city riding)
- Estimated range: 300+ km per full tank
Maintenance & Warranty
- First service: 1,000 km
- Regular service interval: 6 months / 6,000 km
- Standard warranty: 5 years / 70,000 km
Performance & Riding Experience
The Hero Xtreme 250R is powered by a 249cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that produces:
- 29.5 BHP @ 9,250 rpm
- 25 Nm @ 7,250 rpm
- DOHC technology for better efficiency

Acceleration & Speed
- 0-60 km/h: 3.6 seconds (claimed: 3.2s)
- 0-100 km/h: 9.1 seconds (claimed: 8.5s)
- Cruising at 100 km/h: ~6,000 rpm in sixth gear
The engine feels lively post 5,500 rpm and continues to pull strongly until 8,500 rpm. The slip and assist clutch makes gearshifting smooth, though the lever reach could be improved.
The refinement levels are excellent, with minimal vibrations up to 7,500 rpm. At higher revs, slight vibrations are noticeable on the footpegs but add to the bike’s character.
Suspension & Handling
- Steel trellis frame with 43mm USD forks at the front
- Gas-charged monoshock with 6-step preload adjustability
- Firm suspension setup for stable high-speed riding
The suspension handles corners well but feels busy on poorly surfaced roads. At triple-digit speeds, the bike remains stable, and the wide handlebars make quick direction changes easy.
Areas for Improvement:
Tyres lack grip, especially during aggressive cornering.
Braking system needs more bite & feedback.
Braking Performance
The Xtreme 250R gets a 320mm front disc and 230mm rear disc with Bybre calipers. The brakes perform decently but lack the strong bite needed for aggressive riding. The ABS kicks in sooner than expected, further limiting braking performance.
Final Verdict: Does the Hero Xtreme 250R Deliver Bang for Your Buck?
The Hero Xtreme 250R is a well-rounded package in the 250cc streetfighter segment. It delivers strong performance, a stylish design, and a premium feature set at an affordable price. However, it still has room for improvement in fit & finish, braking performance, and tyre grip.
Pros:
✅ Bold streetfighter design
✅ Powerful & refined engine
✅ Competitive pricing
✅ Feature-rich package
✅ Comfortable for long rides
✅ Good handling & stability
Cons:
❌ Fit & finish could be better
❌ Brakes lack bite & feel
❌ Tyres limit dynamic performance
❌ Small fuel tank capacity
❌ Complicated ABS mode switching
If you’re looking for an affordable, high-performance streetfighter, the Hero Xtreme 250R is an excellent choice. But if you demand top-notch braking and high-end fit & finish, you may need to look at higher-priced alternatives.
